Tamarillo Taste Test

For my wacky fruit of the month taste test I decided to try a tamarillo because it looked pretty at the grocery store. When I got home I googled tamarillo and found that it's also called a "tree tomato". Ew, not was I was hoping for.
After reading a bunch of ways to eat this fruit I decided to poach it - throw it in boiling water for 10 minutes, peel back the skin, add sugar, and eat it! Preferably with vanilla ice cream, which I just so happened to have in my freezer.
Let's just say... never ever ever again! Two bites was enough. The after taste was the worst part. It looks WAY better than it tasted, which is hard to believe since that's really not a pretty picture. Blech! You win some, you lose some.

  1. Good for you for trying something different... now I know I won't be trying that! What could you compare the taste to? Did it seem more vegetable than fruit? Maybe having it with ice cream wasn't a good idea.

  2. Yeah I think your mom might be right - it might be more suited in a vegetable dish???

  3. True, I saw a bunch of recipes for chutney using tamarillos. Oh well, I have no desire to try!

The taste was sort of bitter and tomatoey, even with sugar and ice cream!
