Justin Bobby Jam

I dislike when people ask, "What kind of music do you listen to?" I don't know how to answer this. Anything that's on 102.1? A bit of everything minus this that and the other thing? I do know that I can't believe I grew up with a best friend who belted it out to Whitney and Mariah. Blech.

I saw this guy on the subway the other day just rockin' out (and I mean ROCKIN' out) and I was so curious as to what he was listening to. Last year at Christmas our friends in BC sent us a CD with all their favourites tunes from 2008, which I thought was a great idea.

Since I know all of you are dying to hear what's on my playlist, I thought I'd share with you the best CD I have ever compiled. Ohmygosh, it is just so good. I call it the "Justin Bobby Jam" and if you are a 14 year old girl you might know where I got that title from :)

1) Sleeping Sickness - City & Colour
2) The Way I Am - Ingrid Michaelson
3) Sex On Fire - Kings of Leon
4) The Girl - City & Colour
5) Take Me To The Riot - Stars
6) When The Night Feels My Song - Bedouin SoundClash
7) Keep The Car Running - The Arcade Fire
8) Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups
9) Welcome To The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance
10) Life Of A Soldier - Ill Scarlett
11) Starlight - Muse
12) Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis

I made this CD almost a year ago and I still love it.

360 Degrees of Pure Bono

Deep thoughts regarding tonight's U2 concert:

1) If U2 had a greatest hits concert it would pretty much be the best thing in the entire world.
2) Bono is a great singer but needs to work on his dance moves asap.
3) I need to work for a company that gives employees perks.
4) That was the coolest stage setup ever. Lots of movable stuff.
5) ALWAYS make sure your camera batteries are charged.
6) Jackets with red lazers on them are just as neat as they sound.
7) Bono makes girls faint. For real.
8) Glittery guitars are funtastic.

Can you believe M took these pictures with his iPhone? I can't believe our luck. First we score free tickets from big D, then we walk in at 7pm and find ridiculously close spots to the stage - probably 20 feet from the main stage, and maybe 5 feet from the movable bridges. Other people waited in line overnight for similar spots. Oh me, oh my!

If you read my post from back in July you might remember that u2 was number 1 on my dream concerts to go to. Alleluia, my life is complete.

Hey Megalomaniac

We went to see Incubus play at the Molson Amphitheatre last night. It was gooood. Do you know what the meaning of incubus is? Disturbing.

Here's some pics from the concert. They're terrible, but concert pics usually are unless you pay the big bucks. These seats were $10 (plus $15 in fees of course) which I think is quite a steal.

M was as happy as can be because they played "Redefine", which I had never heard before. It was funny to watch him rock out though. Later he said, "My life is now complete."

I'm happy my husband finally got to see Incubus play, he's been wanting to forever. He has now seen his top 3 bands play live - NIN, Incubus, and Coheed and Cambria. In no particular order, because I'm not sure of it. Maybe he'll comment and tell us.

What would your top three be?

I'll go first:
1) U2 (maybe one day)
2) City and Colour (seen a few times)
3) The Tragically Hip -old school styles only (seen a couple of times)

The Song

Last night M and I went to see City and Colour at Massey Hall. Oh so good! Really, what's better than a man with a guitar AND a harmonica?

The show began with a vocal warm-up to "Bohemian Rhapsody" which was pretty fun. Dallas sang all of the songs one might expect plus a few covers. All I can say is that his voice is pure heaven.

A while ago M was telling me the story of "The Girl" and how Dallas had written it for his now wife, Leah Miller. He wrote a slow and fast version of the song and asked Leah which one she preferred. She suggested both, and that's how the song is recorded now - begins slow and repeats, much faster. It's great.

We actually chose this song as the first dance at our wedding, very much as a last minute idea. Usually we think of "Hands Down" by Dashboard Confessional as "our song" but it's just way too fast to dance too. Believe me, we tried, and it wasn't working! So, we browsed through our collection of music and decided on "The Girl".

I think it's pretty perfect.

I Love Geeks

Dallas Green is a huge geek and I love it! I was watching some of the Junos tonight, and was surprised to see that show wasn't all that terrible!

M. was showing me an article about City and Colour on Dose.ca that makes me like Dallas even more. Here's a quote: Green says he finds the whole Juno thing decidedly meh. "Awards, they just make me feel weird," he says. Read more here.

Don't you just want to roll him into a little ball and eat him up?

In the article, he also talks about writing "The Girl", which I'm quite partial to! I love watching him scrunch up his face as he sings. It's very odd, but cute.

Listen to Oceanship

Last night M. and I went downtown to the shittiest of the shit holes, Holy Joes. This whole place is quite disgusting and because it was snowy, the stairwell had puddles everywhere. Ew. To get to Holy Joes you have to walk through the Reverb, which seems to feature screaming bands a lot. I was scared. It sounded demonic. M quite enjoyed it.

Anyway, once you get into Holy Joes it's a little better and there's couches and chairs and Christmas lights hanging from the ceiling. And no screaming, thank goodness. We were there to see one of our favourite Indie bands, Oceanship. Here's the video for one of their songs, Hotblack.

We've been listening to this band for many years now and this was the first show they played in Canada for a long while! So good. Carly is absolutely amazing on the piano, I just like watching her fingers the entire time.

They have been played on The Edge a couple of times now, will be playing live at 228 Yonge soonish, and have a free show at The Horseshoe on April 14th. Who wants to go?!
